Indonesia, From Laboratory to Industry and Community

Many scientists including young scientists (students) in Indonesia whose works stopped only in the laboratories and scientific journals. This happens because of discrepancies between educational and research agencies with industrial agencies and other stakeholders. So the follow-up of research results can not continue. And this situation happens continuously and is considered as natural condition in the community, but in fact there is something wrong.

On the other hand, the Indonesian people are not fully aware of the conditions around and development of technology comprehensively. Businesses that they do often less productive because of competition. Thus creating the traditional markets and the modern markets. In fact, if they keep up with technology, of course what they trade in will up-to-date and increases their income. These facts become a barrier of society prosperity rising in Indonesia.

I studied at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, in the fields of geography, especially in spatial analysis. In addition, i also joined the student activity unit in field of research called study club. I joined in two study clubs, one at the faculty level and the other at the university level. I joined both with aim to improve my research skill, because students is demanded more in this expertise. Many things i got from here. A year after joining, i was appointed as a president of the faculty study club. Some leadership experience that i have ever got was became a team leader of the scientific ideas paper about disaster victims evacuation strategy which was presented at the National Student Scientific Week in Makassar, 2011. And now the idea is being developed in my department. For another experience, i had the opportunity to be a speaker at the National Seminar themed “Tata Ruang Berbasis Bencana” in Yogyakarta, 2011. In November 2012, i was appointed as a responsible person of National Event named “Geo-environment Scholars Championship” for third year undergraduate students and graduated students. I also became a pioneer of research-based guided village in collaboration between some study clubs in the university. We have managed developing of biogas for daily household, increasing the quality of the rice planting, mapping the regional potential, and constructing a library for learning place.

I did these things as a form of concern to the community. Because students have a strategic role in integrating research and dedication, according to “Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi”. Students can directly apply the knowledge gained in the campus to the community. Their expertise also can be improved by means of research, especially interdisciplinary research. After I spend a lot of time to improving research and dedication in the faculty and the university, it is time i go on to the national level. Hopefully, with this decision, I can increase my experiences and networks. Then there will be more people that I can serve.

#Written as a requirement of YLI 2013. Wish Allah give best, i am approved. Aamiin..
